You might shrug off diabetes as something that you’ll never have to worry about, especially if you don’t have a family history of the condition, but you really shouldn’t. Over 7.8% of the population of the United States suffers from the condition and millions more are at risk of developing it through poor diet and health. As the seventh leading cause of death in the country, it’s something well worth being concerned about and something you’ll need to get treatment for as soon as possible to stay fit and healthy. Many people let symptoms of diabetes go on for months and even years without getting them checked out by a medical professional– something that is not only unhealthy but could be life threatening. If you want to keep your eye of for signs of diabetes, here are some symptoms of the condition that you should never ignore.
Constant exhaustion. There are a lot of things that can cause an individual to be tired all the time, many of which need to be addressed with your doctor. Diabetes can make you tired because your cells are not getting the energy from glucose they require. If you’re feeling sluggish and tired no matter how much sleep you get, get some testing done. It could be diabetes or perhaps a thyroid condition which also is important to address.
Increased thirst. If you find yourself drinking glass after glass of liquids and you’re still thirsty, this could be an early sign of diabetes. The hyperglycemia caused by diabetes causes your body to not be able to absorb the glucose it needs, instead flushing it out through increased urination. To compensate, you’ll get very, very thirsty.
Blurred vision. Diabetes can cause the lenses of your eyes to shrink and swell as your blood glucose goes up and down. Your eyes simply can’t adjust quick enough to compensate and so your vision becomes blurry. If you’re having blurred vision, get a checkup. You might simply need a new prescription or it might be another health problem.
Increased hunger. Along with increased thirst comes increased hunger. If you’re feeling hungry all the time and no matter how much you eat don’t feel full, you should get checked out for diabetes.
Slowed healing. From bruises to infections, one of the early signs of diabetes is a slowed healing time. When glucose levels are off in your body your white blood cells cannot function properly, making it much harder to heal and fight infection.
If you think you might be developing diabetes and exhibit some or all of these symptoms don’t wait to get to a doctor. The sooner you get medical help, the sooner you’ll be able to balance out your body and reduce the damage diabetes can do.
