College students aren’t often thought of as the pinnacle of nutritious eaters, but the fact is, if you want to get ahead in school, success just might start at your plate. Nutrition is essential to a healthy body and mind, and you can go a long way to supporting your mental capacity with brain food. Read on to learn about what you can do to improve your educational performance with food.

Consume the right fats. You’ve probably been trained to believe that fat is evil and should be avoided, but in fact, fat is essential to a healthy diet and especially a healthy brain. Omega-3s are incredibly important to your brain cells, learning, and memory. By consuming Omega-3s, you’ll be able to boost your alertness, resistance to stress, as well as memory. Fatty fish and cooking oils like canola and walnut are a good source of Omega-3s.

Give your brain carb fuel. You’ve probably heard carbs are evil, too, but in fact, they are also essential to your brain and body functioning efficiently. Your brain constantly requires glucose, and will typically get it from the carbohydrates you’ve eaten. If your glucose level drops, you may deprive your brain of the fuel it needs to keep going, and become confused or sluggish.

Eat frequently. Give your brain regular portions of energy throughout the day instead of loading on huge amounts of it just a few times. By grazing on food all day, not overloading it with lots of food at once, you can optimize your brain power and keep your blood sugar, or glucose to feed your brain, at a steady level. Nibble throughout the day, or if you must eat three large meals a day, cut back a bit and make up the difference with healthy snacks in between.

Drink water. Yes, this frequently used piece of advice is really true. Your brain is mostly made up of water, and you must have enough of it to keep things lubricated and moving. If you allow yourself to become dehydrated, you may feel stagnant, low on energy, or develop a headache, all of which are terrible for studying.

These are just a few of the ways you can eat to improve your educational performance. Be sure to follow a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein for a strong body and sharp mind.
