Some people truly enjoy working out. For others, however, getting to the gym and getting in a good workout can be an uphill battle and one that is often put off with a litany of excuses. The reality is that in many cases, getting to the gym or starting to workout at home is the hardest part of the battle and if you can simply get past that hump, you can get through a workout. If you want to stop making excuses and start sticking to your workout routine, here are a few tips that can help.
- Get it out of the way. If you truly don’t like working out sometimes the best solution is to just get it over with. The more you procrastinate, the more likely you are to not work out at all. Working out in the morning may be less fun, especially in the cold winter months, but it can be a necessary evil in getting you to the gym and feeling healthy.
- Remember: mental fatigue isn’t the same as physical fatigue. Many people flake on workouts because they tell themselves they’re simply too tired after work to workout. Of course, their mind might indeed be very tired but unless they’ve been running, lifting heavy things or doing a lot of physical activity at work that’s no excuse not to work out. Sometimes getting in a little physical activity can actually help refresh your mind and relieve your stress.
- The world is your gym. One of the most common excuses for not working out is believing you don’t have the time or energy to travel to the gym. Yet working out can easily be done at home, outside or anywhere you want. You can help fight this excuse by investing in workout videos and equipment that will let you get fit even if you decide to stay home.
- Work with yourself, not against. Cant’ stand the thought of running on the treadmill for half an hour? Feel sick after working out in the morning? Stop working against yourself when you plan your workouts and you’ll be much more likely to stick to them instead of making excuses. For instance, you could go to the gym when your favorite TV show is on, or workout at the time of day when you feel at your peak.
- Be creative. You don’t always have to hit the gym if you want to workout, especially if your day is already jam-packed with other things you need to get done. Even if you’re tight on time you can still get a workout. Think it can’t be done? Try walking to your errands or doing simple moves while you sit at a desk and work. There’s always time for a workout, even if you have a very busy day.
You might not always feel like working out but the hard work you put in when working out can help you to stay healthy, fit and may even help things like mood, work performance and sleep as well. So the sooner you stop making excuses and get to working out, the quicker you can enjoy these benefits.
