The Southwestern state of Arizona is known for its beautiful desert scenery of mountains and mesas, toasty summers, mild winters and sprawling big cities. It is also known for natural wonders like the Grand Canyon and the Barringer Meteorite Crater, both adding to the many reasons Arizona is a fascinating place to live. The good news for would-be nurses in this state (or nurses looking to relocate here) is that the health care industry remains strong here, even though Arizona’s economy has been hit hard by the recession. In fact, while other construction has declined, construction of hospitals has seen somewhat of a boom in recent years. Also, registered nurses are in demand in Arizona due to a critical nursing shortage. One study showed that the state must add nearly 50,000 registered nurses over nine years to meet the state’s health care needs. This is due in part to the state’s massive population growth in recent years.

While RNs may see sharp competition for jobs in the state’s larger hospitals, qualified nurses can still find numerous job opportunities at doctor’s offices, home health care agencies, nursing homes and smaller outpatient clinics. The most in-demand jobs in Arizona are concentrated in and around the major metropolitan areas at Tucson, Phoenix and its suburbs, and Yuma. Some of the largest employers for registered nurses in Arizona include Banner Health, Catholic Healthcare West and Scottsdale Healthcare. Those who wish to become nurses in the state can get information about state licensure through the Arizona State Board of Nursing and search nursing schools listed on the Arizona Nurses Association website. The Arizona Nurses Association is a professional organization that represents the state’s nurses, and the organization maintains a website where nurses can search for jobs, find continuing education opportunities and even connect with other nurses.
