The New England state of Connecticut is an excellent place both to live and to start a nursing career. Even though it’s been difficult in recent years for some would-be nursing students to enter nursing programs due to a critical shortage of nurse educators, qualified individuals who do graduate from such programs generally have no trouble finding work. After all, the nursing shortage is particularly pronounced in Connecticut, and nurses are very high in demand here. Annual salaries for nurses in Connecticut are also higher on average than most states. Another great thing about living in Connecticut in general is its rich colonial history—those who live here can explore numerous museums and historic places that help tell the story of some of Connecticut’s earliest settlers, as well as shine a light on early American history. Connecticut also has a beautiful coastline to boast of and brilliant fall foliage in September and October.

Qualified nurses are needed in Connecticut’s hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, doctor’s offices, and home health care agencies. The most in-demand nursing jobs in Connecticut are concentrated in and around the more heavily populated areas, such as Bridgeport, Hartford and New Haven. Some of the largest and best-known employers of registered nurses in Connecticut include: Yale-New Haven Hospital, Danbury Hospital, Hartford Hospital, and St. Francis Care. Those who wish to become nurses in the state can get information about state licensure through the Board of Examiners for Nursing (under the Connecticut Department of Public Health). The Connecticut Nurses Association is the professional organization that represents the state’s nurses, and the association maintains a website where RNs here can search for jobs, find continuing education opportunities and keep up to date on issues relevant to Connecticut’s nurses.
