Renowned for its beautiful coastline dotted with scenic lighthouses, as well as for its delicious lobster and blueberries, Maine is a wonderful place to launch a career in nursing. For one, Maine compensates its nurses well, with nurses earning more here on average than most other states in the U.S. Secondly, Maine appears to be weathering the economic storm better than most of the nation, which bodes well for job-seekers here. The unemployment rate in April 2010 was significantly less than the national jobless rate. Also, Maine is not immune from the nationwide nursing shortage. Because Maine’s health care centers have such a great need for nurses, some have even offered incentive packages, including signing bonuses, to nurses from out-of-state and have budgeted to hire travel and contract nurses to fill in critical vacancies. A qualified RN in Maine does not often stay unemployed for long.
