If you cringe at the alarm when it goes off every morning and hate getting up early with every fiber of your being, it’s likely that you’ll never be a true morning person. Yet there are ways that you can help train yourself to hate getting up early and that will make the process a little easier. You might love sleeping in, but it’s true what they say about the early bird catching the worm and the earlier you get the up the more you’ll get done and more successful you’ll be. Whether you’re getting up for a run or to head to work, here are some tips that can make you into a better, happier early riser– even if it’s not in your nature.
- Get up right when your alarm goes off. If you want to get used to getting up early then you need to be tough with yourself. Don’t allow yourself to stay in bed or negotiate your rising time. Just get up and get moving. This will help you develop a routine and change your natural body rhythms, essential for getting up early.
- Move your alarm. It’s pretty easy to hit snooze and fall back asleep if your alarm is right next to your bed. It’s a lot harder if it’s across the room. Move yours so you’ll be forced to get out of bed to shut it off, reducing your chances of simply going back to bed.
- Reward yourself. Don’t make getting out of bed a total pain if you want to do it consistently. Make something you love doing part of your morning routine. Whether it’s sipping a cup of tea or walking to get the morning paper is up to you.
- Go to bed when you’re tired. This might mean that you go to bed later, but it is an essential part of retraining your body. After that first sleepy day, you’ll start to fall into a routine and it’ll be easier to get up early. Plus, you won’t be wasting time in bed when you’re not sleeping.
- Find a motivation. You’re not going to be able to fight your desire to stay in bed without a pretty good reason to get up. It’s likely that if you’re trying to get up earlier that you already have a reason, but if you don’t now’s the time to come up with one. Maybe you want to finish homework before class, get in a workout or just wake up slowly.
You might never truly be a morning person if you weren’t born one, but you can learn to get up earlier and get more done with a little practice. After a few days of getting up early on a schedule, it should get easier.
