The state of Texas is well-known for the quality of its health care; the state has excellent patient-care facilities as well as many good learning facilities that help train future health care professionals, many of whom go on to affect lives all across the country.
If you’re at all interested in attending nursing school in Texas, then you should definitely consider learning more about and perhaps even applying to the following five programs. They are consistently ranked fairly high by the US News and World Report, which is a great resource for discovering potential programs if you decide to look outside of Texas.
Located within the enormous medical complex in the city, the School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston puts students near some of the best doctors and facilities available in the country. Students in the program can earn a variety of degrees, from a bachelor’s to a doctor’s degree in nursing, as well as a doctor’s in nursing practice and can participate in other post-graduate opportunities. Over 800 students are enrolled in the program at any given time.
An afternoon’s drive from Houston is the University of Texas at Austin, which currently enrolls between 600 and 700 students in its nursing program. The school offers a bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degree in nursing. Students gain hands-on experience in area hospitals as well as by assisting the distinguished faculty in their various research projects.
Despite having suffered recently during Hurricane Ike, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is once again flourishing. The program offers incoming students a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in nursing, which it administers through intense academic work, research, and clinical practice at several of the medical centers around campus, including a Level I Trauma Center, a Shriners Burn Hospital, and Galveston’s Criminal Justice Hospital.
The Louise Herrington School of Nursing at Baylor University in Dallas combines the benefits of a strong faith-based learning community with the strengths of a successful faculty in order to give its nursing students the best possible education. Nursing students work with faculty in Dallas area hospitals, including the Baylor University Medical Center. The Louise Herrington School of Nursing offers a bachelor’s degree program and a master’s degree program to interested students.
The nursing program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio provides for its student body of over 750 students both a traditional bachelor’s degree program in nursing as well as an accelerated track meant to help students who have bachelor’s degrees and experience in unrelated fields. Its graduate students take classes towards earning a master’s degree or a doctor’s degree in nursing. A graduate degree in nursing practice is also in the works, which would help students earn a professional degree towards holding executive and upper-level administrative positions in health care institutions.
